How do you choose a travel pillow for yourself?
Determine the type of travel pillow you want or need
There are so many types to choose from. It all boils down to what you need and why you need them. When choosing a travel pillow, we've created an NFSD standard to make your decision easier. There are only four things to keep in mind: neck support, fabric, size and weight, and durability.
inflatable travel pillow
The cheapest and easiest to use inflatable travel pillow is perfect for travelers on a budget. It's U-shaped - like most travel pillows - and fits easily into your carry-on luggage at any time.
The key factor
Neck Support: This type of travel pillow is just average. This is an inflatable pillow and won't provide enough support for your neck like an ergonomic pillow.
Fabric: Inflatable toys are usually made of plastic. They are either made of stretchable polyester material or protected with a removable polyester or cotton cover.
Size and Weight: They are very lightweight due to their inflatable nature. You don't even have to worry about going over your carry-on baggage - it's just air!
Durability: It depends on the material and brand, but can easily wear out if not cared for properly. Make sure to stay away from sharp objects to avoid unexpected deflation!
Micro Bead Travel Pillow
The bulkiest yet softest microbead travel pillow is filled with small polystyrene beads for comfort for any flight sleeper. These are also the least portable of all travel pillows - because you can't deflate or compress them.
The key factor
Neck Support: Microbeads are small beads scattered throughout the pillow. It's no surprise that they're scattered in places you don't want them in. As a result, significant tilt may occur, resulting in insufficient neck support.
Fabric: Usually with a non-removable outer cover. Some brands have adapted to colder climates with wool as the outer layer or even just the underside of it. Be careful the fabric is stretched as the beads start to push outward. It may lose its shape!
Size and Weight: While microbead pillows are generally light, they are not intended for lightweight/minimalist or budget travelers. This pillow just takes up so much space that it can be used for other luggage items.
Durability: The durability of the beads is average. It depends on how long it has been used since the fabric can stretch and the beads can pop (not recommended for children).
memory foam travel pillow
Memory foam pillows are among the most comfortable and supportive travel pillows out there. They are stronger than microbeads and inflatables because the density of the memory foam has all been calculated. Memory foam travel pillows are usually compressible and fit into smaller travel bags for convenience.
The key factor
Neck Support: Memory foam travel pillows are best for neck support. That's what they're for - the memory foam shapes your head and neck, giving it the comfort and support it needs. This is a must for long haul flights!
Fabric: Most U-shaped memory foam pillows do not have a removable cover. Typically, the ergonomic shape is compressible. The fabrics used are cotton, polyester, and even bamboo. Ideally, choose one with a machine-washable lid to match the durability of the memory foam. You may need to wash your pillow to keep it fresh longer!
Size and Weight: Incompressibles tend to be bulkier because they don't fit anywhere in your luggage. But a compressible travel pillow apparently does!
Durability: Memory foam is generally made of denser materials, which indicates better overall durability.
